“Miriam” a New Musical originated during the 2002 URJ-NFTY trip to Europe and Israel as a collaboration between Debbie Friedman (the song leader) and Dr. Alan Kaplan (medical director and playwright). Noting the absence of musicals about biblical women we chose “Miriam” as the central character based on mu- sic Debbie had written about her. The story is the journey of a people (The Israelites) from their hardships in Egypt, the exodus across the Red Sea, wanderings in the desert, receiving the 10 Commandments (actually 613) and finally arriving in the Holy land. The role of “Miriam” the first woman prophet cannot be minimized for her gift to find water allowed the survival through the 40 years in the desert.
